Y2K Quilts: World Peace Through Squishies
Without computers and the Internet, Y2K quilts would never have existed. Through this most useful tool, quilters reached out to each other from all parts of the world, united in their passionate love of quilts and in the desire to make something tangible and memorable to remind them of the momentus occasion that is the Year 2000.
Although separated by thousands of miles and having never met in person, quilters "met" online, e-mailed each other, and arranged to swap squishies of fabric to make their quilts. Our 25 exhibit quilts represent 80 countries, and minus Antarctica, they represent every continent on the globe. To the right of this page, you will find a complete list of all the places represented in our exhibit.
A Nobel Peace Prize, it has jokingly been suggested, should go to the anonymous quilter who first purposed to swap 2000 pieces of fabric for a quilt to celebrate the year 2000. Little could she have known the impact of that, seemingly insignificant, idea. That first posting has resulted in thousands of quilters from all parts of the world, all races, ages, and backgrounds, cooperating together to create these wonderful and unique quilts.
